Details
That great 1956-57 NHL season turned out to be a career best for Real Chevrefils. He quickly dropped off, scoring nine goals in 44 games for the Boston Bruins in 1957-58 while also seeing time in the AHL with the Springfield Indians. He would play just 30 more games in the NHL after that, all with the Bruins in 1958-59.
His 31 goals in 1956-57 led the Bruins and placed him fifth in the NHL, one behind fourth place Ed Litzenberger and 13 behind leader Gordie Howe. Included in those 31 was the only NHL career hat trick for Chevrefils. On November 17, 1956, he was in on all of Boston’s goals in a 4-4 tie with the New York Rangers at the Madison Square Garden.
Real scored Boston’s first three goals, all on New York goalie Gump Worsley. With the Bruins down 4-3 with just six seconds left in the game, Chevrefils and Doug Mohns set up Jerry Toppazzini’s game tying goal. Don McKenney had three assists for the Bruins while Red Sullivan had a three point game for the Rangers.
Between 1951-52 and 1958-59, Real Chevrefils played 387 regular season and 30 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. On June 3, 1955, he was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Terry Sawchuk, Vic Stasiuk, Marcel Bonin and Lorne Davis to Boston. He was traded back to Detroit midway through the 1955-56 season.
