Long-time captain and perennial All-Star with the Chicago Black Hawks, “Pete” went to Toronto last summer. He’s known as an “offensive defenseman” and is always near the top of the scoring list for defensemen. Pierre won three straight Norris Trophies as NHL’s best defenseman.

Pierre Pilote was team captain for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1961-62 to 1967-68. He replaced Ed Litzenberger in the role and was replaced by Pat Stapleton. From 1959-60 to 1966-67, he was selected as an NHL All-Star, five times to the First Team and three times to the Second Team.

Offensively, 1964-65 was the best season for Pilote. Over 68 games, he scored 14 goals and assisted on 45 for 59 points. That year, he had four three-point games. On January 28, 1965 at Boston Garden, Pierre’s shorthanded goal at 8:57 of the second period turned out to be the game winner in a 6-2 win for Chicago. He added two assists on goals Bill Hay and Chico Maki.

His three Norris Trophy wins were between 1962-63 and 1964-65. In 1962-63, it was tight race between Pilote and Carl Brewer of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tim Horton was the runner-up in 1963-64 and Jacques Laperriere came second in 1964-65. Pierre was also runner-up for the award on three occasions.

Between 1955-56 and 1968-69, Pierre Pilote played 890 regular season and 86 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs. He won a Stanley Cup championship with Chicago in 1960-61. On May 23, 1968, he was traded to Toronto with Jim Pappin going the other way. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.
