Details

On October 14, 1978, the New York Islanders had a wild one against Toronto at Maple Leafs Gardens with 17 total goals scored. Denis Potvin’s record setting hat trick started at 3:40 of the second period when he scored his first of the 1978-79 NHL season on Toronto goalie Mike Palmateer, assisted by Bob Lorimer and Mike Kaszycki.

With Darryl Sittler in the box for tripping, Potvin scored his second of the game at 5:07 of the second, assisted by Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy. Lanny McDonald then took a penalty for boarding, setting the stage for Potvin’s hat trick goal and second consecutive power play marker at 7:01, assisted by Billy Harris and Kaszycki.

The hat trick was part of a seven goal outburst between the two teams over a span of just 7:08 in that second period. The Maple Leafs ended up winning the game, powered by a seven point night for Darryl Sittler and a five assist game for Borje Salming.

1980-81 was a bounce back season for Denis after appearing in just 31 regular season games in 1979-80. He put up 20 goals and assisted on 56 for 76 points while leading the Islanders to their second of four straight Stanley Cup championships. He was a First Team All-Star and finished a very close second to Randy Carlyle in voting for the Norris Trophy.

Between 1973-74 and 1987-88, Denis Potvin played 1,060 regular season and 185 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Islanders. He topped the 20 goal plateau nine times over his career and had a career best 101 points in 1978-79. At the time, he was just the second NHL defenseman to reach the 100 point plateau after Bobby Orr. To date, it has been accomplished just 15 times by six different players.
