Details
Dick Cherry got his start in the NHL way back in 1956-57 while still a junior with the Barrie Flyers. He played six games with the Boston Bruins that year. Cherry wouldn’t make his return to the league until 12 years later with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Cherry was picked in the eleventh round of the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, 63rd overall, out of the Bruins organization. However, he would not play pro hockey in 1967-68, getting his start with the Flyers the following year.
In 1962-63, playing alongside the likes of Harry Sinden, Pat Stapleton, Wayne Connelly, J.P. Parise and Bruce Gamble, Dick enjoyed his first of two minor league championships, leading the Kingston Frontenacs to an EPHL title. In 1966-67, he was a member of the talent-laden Oklahoma City Blazers that took the CPHL championship. That team included the goaltending trio of Gerry Cheevers, Bernie Parent and Doug Favell.
Between 1956-57 and 1969-70, Dick Cherry played 145 regular season and four playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers. His four playoff games were played in the 1968-69 quarter-final series between the Flyers and St. Louis Blues. The Blues swept the set in four, outscoring Philly 17-3. One of those three goals was off the stick of Cherry.
