“The Magnetic Pole” is a husky forward who starred in the Stanley Cup playoffs with Toronto in 1967, but was dealt to Detroit in the trade with Frank Mahovlich last season. He’s of Polis descent and a good hard hitter.

After scoring a modest 13 goals and 35 points for the Toronto Maple Leafs over 68 regular season games in 1966-67, Pete Stemkowski contributed 12 points in 12 playoff games with the Leafs capturing the Stanley Cup championship.

Of his five goals in those 1967 playoffs, two were game winners. In game five of the semi-final series against the Chicago Blackhawks, Pete assisted on the opening goal of the game by Mike Walton and scored at 2:11 of the third to make the score 3-2 in the 4-2 Toronto win.

In game 2 of the final series against the Montreal Canadiens, Stemkowski scored the first goal of the game in a 3-0 Maple Leafs win. He also assisted on the third goal, scored by Tim Horton on Montreal goalie Rogie Vachon. Johnny Bower made 31 saves for the shutout.

After playing 60 game for the Maple Leafs in 1967-68, Pete was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on March 3, 1968 with Carl Brewer, Frank Mahovlich and Garry Unger for Doug Barrie, Paul Henderson, Floyd Smith and Norm Ullman. In his first full year with the Wings, 1968-69, he topped the 20 goal plateau for the first of five times over his NHL career.

Between 1963-64 and 1977-78, Pete Stemkowski played 967 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings. His best offensive season came with the Rangers in 1973-74 when he scored 25 goals and assisted on 45 for 70 points.
