The Pittsburgh Penguins were Eddie Shack’s sixth team over his NHL career. He would return to the Toronto Maple Leafs for one last stint before retiring. He was almost a member of the Detroit Red Wings back in 1960. A trade was made between the Rangers and Red Wings that would have seen Shack and Bill Gadsby go to Detroit with Red Kelly and Billy McNeill going to the Big Apple. However, Kelly and McNeill refused to report to New York and the trade was voided.

1972-73 was a real swansong for “The Entertainer”. With the Penguins, he scored 25 goals and assisted on 20 for 45 points over 74 games. The goal total was two off his career high of 27 in 1970-71, a season split between the Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres.

Three of his 25 goals in 1972-73 came in a November 29, 1972 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. The Penguins won the game 7-4 with Shack scoring the winning goal, along with two powerplay markers. All seven Pittsburgh goals were scored on Toronto goalie Ron Low.

Between 1958-59 and 1974-75, Eddie Shack appeared in 1,047 regular season and 74 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a member of four Stanley Cup championship teams in Toronto.

In game five of the 1962-63 Stanley Cup final against the Detroit Red Wings, Shack scored what held on to be the game winning goal to clinch a 4-1 series win. Eddie scored his second of the playoffs at 13:28 of the third with assists going to Kent Douglas and Bob Pulford. The goal put the Leafs ahead 2-1. Dave Keon would score into the empty net with five seconds left in the match as Toronto won the game 3-1.
