Details

In 1975-76, Rod Gilbert did lead the New York Rangers in scoring with a three point edge over Steve Vickers. It was the second consecutive year leading the team after his 97 point campaign in 1974-75 gave him a six point lead over Jean Ratelle.

The 1975-76 NHL season saw Gilbert’s last of seven career hat tricks and third of three four goal games. On February 7, 1976, Rod scored four of New York’s five goals in a 5-4 win over the Red Wings at Detroit Olympia. He had just four shots on Detroit goalie Doug Grant while the Rangers as a team had just 22. Steve Vickers benefited with three assists on the night.

Interestingly, three of his seven hat tricks were against the Red Wings, including two four goal games. Gilbert’s only penalty shot in the NHL was also against the Wings. On November 27, 1963, Rod got the PS goal on Detroit goalie Terry Sawchuk in a 3-2 win at Madison Square Garden.

Between 1960-61 and 1977-78, Rod Gilbert played 1,065 regular season and 79 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Rangers. He was the Bill Masterton Trophy winner in 1975-76 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
