Details

Frank Mahovlich did reach the 500 goal plateau in 1972-73, the fifth NHL player to accomplish the feat. On March 21, 1973, the Canadiens hosted the Vancouver Canucks at the Montreal Forum. Despite the huge mismatch between the two clubs, the Canucks stayed equal with a 2-2 tie going into the third period.

However, it was the Big M that scored the game winning goal at 1:27 of the third, his 36th of the 1972-73 NHL season and the 500th of his career. The goal was assisted by Henri Richard and Guy Lapointe and scored on Dunc Wilson.

Mahovlich finished up his NHL career with 533 goals over 1,181 games. He added 51 more in 137 playoff games along with 93 in the WHA. The 533 now ranks him 36th all-time in NHL history. As for games played, his 1,181 now ranks him tied for 146th with Scott Young.

1972-73 would bring another great post season run for Mahovlich. In 17 games, he contributed 23 points, two behind team leader Yvan Cournoyer. The Habs marched to the final series and took out the Chicago Blackhawks in six games for the Stanley Cup championship. In the sixth game, Frank scored the game tying goal while also assisting on Montreal’s first goal of the game, scored by Henri Richard. It was Cournoyer that scored the series winning goal on Chicago goalie Tony Esposito.

Between 1956-57 and 1973-74, Frank Mahovlich appeared in 1,181 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. The Big M was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
