Ray is married. His last amateur club was the Verdun Black Hawks of the QMJHL. Ray enjoys spending his leisure hours playing golf.

Ray Bourque’s numbers would continue to improve in 1982-83 with 22 goals and 51 assists for 73 points. He also got to experience his first post season success with the Gerry Cheevers coached Boston Bruins reaching the semi-final before falling to the New York Islanders. Bourque put up 23 points in 17 games.

That year, he finished third in voting for the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman behind winner Rod Langway and runner-up Mark Howe. He had three 4-point games in 82-83 and recorded his only career hat trick in a game against the Quebec Nordiques (see Facebook post below for more details on the hat trick game).

Bourque was the eighth overall pick at the 1979 NHL Entry Draft by Boston. He starred with Trois-Rivieres, Sorel and Verdun over his three years in the QMJHL prior to jumping to the NHL and winning the Calder Trophy in 1979-80 as NHL rookie of the year. Ray went on to win the Norris Trophy five times and he won a Stanley Cup championship with the Colorado Avalanche in his final year.

Between 1979-80 and 2000-01, Ray Bourque played 1,612 regular season and 214 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins and Avalanche. His number 77 has been retired by both teams and Ray was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
