Card Notes

Audio Version:

Bronco reached Boston via New York and Montreal. Has hard, accurate wrist shot. Also clever playmaker. Broken jaw forced him to wear facial protection most of last year, but he was still a dangerous scorer.

En Français

Bronco est passé aux Bruins après avoir joué avec les Rangers et les Canadiens. Il est un habile “play-maker” et il est un compteur prolifique.

Details

Vic Lynn is the only NHL player to play at least a game with all six teams during the Original 6 era. Bronco Horvath came close. Originally a prospect of the Detroit Red Wings, he never played a game with the club. But, Horvath did play for the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs.

After an outstanding season with the WHL’s Edmonton Flyers (Detroit’s affiliate) in 1954-55, Horvath was traded to the Rangers on August 18, 1955 along with Dave Creighton for Billy Dea and Aggie Kukulowicz. With the Flyers, Bronco led the league with 50 goals and 110 points over 67 games. Along with John Bucyk, Norm Ullman and Glenn Hall, Horvath helped the team to the regular season and playoff championship.

In 1958-59, Horvath put up his only career NHL hat trick in a game against the New York Rangers on February 8, 1959. In a 4-1 Bruins win at Boston Garden, Bronco scored the team’s 1st, 3rd and 4th goals of the game, all on New York goalie Gump Worsley. John Bucyk and Doug Mohns did the set-up work with three assists each in the match.

1959-60 would bring one of the tightest races for the Art Ross Trophy in the history of the NHL. The battle between Horvath and Bobby Hull came down to the final game of the season when the Blackhawks and Bruins met. Bronco went into the game with a one point edge but the Golden Jet scored a goal and added an assist to leapfrog Horvath who was held off the scoresheet. (We take a closer look at that game in the Facebook post below).

Between 1955-56 and 1967-68, Bronco Horvath played 434 regular season and 36 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers, Canadiens, Bruins, Blackhawks, Maple Leafs and Minnesota North Stars. When he arrived in Minnesota for the start of the 1967-68 season, Horvath had not played in the NHL since the 1962-63 season. In between, he was part of three Calder Cup winning teams with the Rochester Americans in the AHL. He played just 14 games for the North Stars, the last games of his NHL career.
