Details

Certainly, after his 92 goals in 1981-82, the hockey world must have thought Wayne Gretzky had reached his limit. After all, the previous record of 76 by Phil Esposito in 1970-71 had seemed unbreakable. Well, the goal total still stands as an NHL record today but The Great One wasn’t done quite yet.

Gretz would increase his assists record from 120 to 125 in 1982-83 while his goals and total points dropped. Eventually, he would set inconceivable marks with 163 assists and 215 points during the 1985-86 NHL season.

In 1981-82, Wayne would score three or more goals in a game ten times. Of those, three were four goal games and he had a five goal match. The five goal game came on December 30, 1981 at Northland Coliseum against the Philadelphia Flyers. Gretzky added an assist for six points on the night with the Oilers winning 7-5. All were scored on Pete Peeters with the fifth going into the empty net, assisted by Glenn Anderson and Edmonton goalie Grant Fuhr. That fifth goal was his 50th of the season.

Wayne spent just one full year with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in what is now the OHL. In 1977-78, he scored 70 and assisted on 112 for 182 points over just 63 games. He previously appeared in three games with the Peterborough Petes in 1976-77.

Between 1979-80 and 1998-99, Wayne Gretzky played 1,487 regular season and 208 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999.
