Card Notes

Always a prolific scorer in the minors and the NHL, Wayne Connelly led the West Division in goals the first year of expansion. He was developed by Montreal, but broke in with Boston. Seldom draws penalty time.

Details

In 1967-68 with the Minnesota North Stars, Wayne Connelly not only led the West Division in goal scoring but also led the entire NHL in power play goals and game winning goals. Despite this breakout success with the North Stars, he played just one full season with the club. After 55 games to start 1968-69, Connelly was traded to the Detroit Red Wings for Danny Lawson.

A similar fate would meet Wayne in Detroit. In his only full season with the team, 1969-70, he put up respectable numbers with 23 goals and 59 points. Yet, 51 games into the 1970-71 campaign, he was shipped to the St. Louis Blues with Garry Unger for Red Berenson and Tim Ecclestone.

His arrival in Vancouver was an interesting journey. On November 15, 1971, after 15 games with St. Louis to start the season, he was traded to the New York Rangers with Jim Lorentz and Gene Carr for Jack Egers, Andre Dupont, Mike Murphy. The following day, the Rangers traded him, Ron Stewart and Dave Balon to the Canucks for Jim Wiste and Gary Doak.

With the Red Wings in 1969-70, Connelly had five game winning goals. Two of those five were against his original team, the Montreal Canadiens. On December 14, 1969 at Detroit Olympia, Wayne scored his ninth of the season, assisted by Alex Delvecchio, to make the score 3-1. The Wings held on for a 5-2 win. The second was on March 7, 1970 at the Montreal Forum. Connelly scored Detroit’s third goal of the game, assisted by Gary Bergman, in a 3-2 victory.

Between 1960-61 and 1971-72, Wayne Connelly played 543 regular season and 24 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Minnesota North Stars, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks. He also appeared in 366 regular season and 37 playoff games in the WHA between 1972-73 and 1976-77 with the Minnesota Fighting Saints, Cleveland Crusaders, Calgary Cowboys and Edmonton Oilers.
