Details

A solid stay-at-home defenseman, Warren Godfrey scored just 32 goals over 789 regular season games in the NHL. One of those 32 was shorthanded with the Boston Bruins and one was a game winning goal with the Detroit Red Wings.

In his second full season in the NHL, 1953-54, Godfrey put in five goals from the blue line. His fourth was a shorthanded marker in a February 24, 1954 game between his Bruins and the New York Rangers, a 5-3 win. Warren scored at 10:55 of the first period, assisted by Milt Schmidt, while Joe Klukay was in the box for holding. Interestingly, Godfrey had come out of the box ten seconds earlier after serving a minor for tripping.

In 1959-60, his first of five goals on the season was scored in Detroit’s second game of the season. Again, the New York Rangers were the opponent. Late in the third with the game tied at 2-2, Godfrey scored a powerplay goal at 16:09 on Gump Worsley, assisted by Gordie Howe and Billy McNeill. This held as the game winner in the 4-2 win at Detroit Olympia.

Between 1952-53 and 1967-68, Warren Godfrey played 788 regular season and 52 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins and Red Wings. Much of the later part of his career from 1963-64 on was spent in the minors. He won a Calder Cup championship in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets in 1966-67.
