The two goals that Tom Lysiak scored seven seconds apart on April 1, 1977 remained a record for the Atlanta Flames over the duration of the franchise’s existence in Georgia. At the Omni in Atlanta against the Chicago Blackhawks, Lysiak opened the scoring just 1:14 into the game on Tony Esposito, assisted by Willi Plett and Eric Vail.

At 1:21, Tom struck again, this time unassisted. Before the first frame was up, the Flames had a 5-1 lead and Lysiak had two more points, assisting on goals by Vail and Plett. The trio combined for ten points and the Flames held on for a 5-4 win.

After moving to Calgary, Lysiak’s record was topped by Lanny McDonald. On March 22, 1984, Lanny scored two goal six seconds apart in a 6-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Both goals were scored on Greg Stefan and assisted by Danny Quinn.

1978-79 would be the end of Tom’s time with the Flames. 52 games into the season, he was traded to the Blackhawks Greg Fox, Harold Phillipoff, Pat Ribble and Miles Zaharko for Ivan Boldirev, Darcy Rota and Phil Russell. He finished out his NHL career with Chicago.

Between 1973-74 and 1985-86, the second overall pick by the Flames at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft played 919 regular season and 76 playoff games in the National Hockey League with Atlanta and Chicago. Tom Lysiak surpassed the 20 goal plateau nine times and had a career best 32 with the Hawks in 1981-82.
