Card Notes
Tom finished second in the rookie of the year balloting for the Calder Cup last season. He led the Flames in scoring, and is considered to be a potential superstar. He’s versatile, and can play all three forward positions. Tom is a good skater, and a fine playmaker who controls the puck perfectly.
Tom was Atlanta’s #1 pick in the 1973 amateur draft.
Details
First off, it’s the Calder Trophy, not the Calder Cup. The Calder Cup, of course, goes to the playoff champion in the American Hockey League. Interestingly, the AHL is a league Tom Lysiak never played in. Lysiak jumped right from junior and played his entire pro career in the National Hockey League.
Tom Lysiak went second overall at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. Ahead of him was Denis Potvin going to Atlanta’s expansion brothers, the New York Islanders. It was Potvin that would take home the Calder Trophy.
Lysiak played 919 regular season games in the NHL with the Flames and Chicago Blackhawks between 1973-74 and 1985-86. He played in 76 Stanley Cup playoff games, all but eleven with Chicago.
