Card Notes
Tim has been with Toronto since 1952-53. He played junior hockey with St. Mike’s and spent three years with Pittsburgh before joining the Maple Leafs. Tim was named to the First All-Star Team last winter and was a member of the Second Team twice. He missed much of the 1955-56 season with a broken leg and jaw.
Details
The Pittsburgh referred to on the back of the card is the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League. Tim Horton played three years with that AHL club from 1949-50 to 1951-52. The 1950-51 Hornets reached the Calder Cup final before losing to the Cleveland Barons.
In 1951-52, the team finished first overall during the regular season and captured the championship with a win over the Providence Reds in the final. That team was coached by King Clancy and led by another future Toronto great George Armstrong.
As far as All-Star Team selections, Horton would be picked First Team two more times in his career and Second Team one more time.
Horton played 1,445 regular season and 126 playoff games between 1949-50 and 1973-74 with the Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. He was part of four Stanley Cup championship teams in Toronto and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
