Card Notes
1963-64 would be the end of Terry Sawchuk’s second stint with the Detroit Red Wings. He had an outstanding season, playing in 53 of the team’s 70 regular season games, posting a 2.64 goals against average with five shutouts. He then played 13 games in the playoffs, helping the fourth place Red Wings reach the Stanley Cup final before losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
A few months later, he was with those Maple Leafs, splitting time in net with Johnny Bower. The two would share Vezina Trophy honours. Sawchuk would make one last return to the Motor City, appearing in 13 games during the 1968-69 season, in between single season campaigns with the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers.
By the time this 1963-64 Parkhurst hockey card came out, Terry Sawchuk had already posted 91 shutouts. That total would rise to 103 before his untimely death after the 1969-70 NHL season. To date, that number ranks second all-time, behind Martin Brodeur and his 125 blanks.
