Details
After just four years, Topps had Terry Sawchuk ranked among the all-time great goalies. They weren’t wrong, to this day, Terry is among the all-time greats. Sawchuk won the Vezina again in 1954-55 and would win a fourth in 1964-65 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, sharing the award with Johnny Bower.
1954-55 would also bring Terry and the Detroit Red Wings their third Stanley Cup championship in four years. Sawchuk would win a fourth but not until 12 years later with the Maple Leafs. 1954-55 was also the last year of Terry’s first stint with the Red Wings. On June 3, 1955, he was traded to the Boston Bruins with Marcel Bonin, Vic Stasiuk and Lorne Davis for Real Chevrefils, Warren Godfrey, Ed Sandford, Gilles Boisvert and Norm Corcoran. He would return after two years, traded for John Bucyk.
Between 1949-50 and 1969-70, Terry Sawchuk appeared in 971 regular season and 106 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. His 103 career shutouts now stand as the second most, behind Martin Brodeur. Sawchuk was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971.
