Details
Terry Harper came to the Detroit Red Wings through a June 23, 1975 trade with the Los Angeles Kings that also saw Dan Maloney come to the Motor City for Marcel Dionne and Bart Crashley. Harper took over the team’s captaincy from Dionne, sharing duties with Danny Grant. He was only team captain for the 1975-76 season before it was switched to Grant and Dennis Polonich.
Harper had previously been captain for the Kings for the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons. Dionne did not take over when he arrived. Instead, Terry was replaced by Mike Murphy.
With the Wings, the low scoring stay-at-home defenseman had a career year offensively in 1975-76. Despite playing just 69 games, Harper had career highs of eight goals, 25 assists and 33 points. Pretty impressive numbers for a guy who scored 35 goals over 1,066 regular season games.
In fact, Terry looked a little like Bobby Orr in a January 8, 1976 game against the Minnesota North Stars at home at the Detroit Olympia. In a 5-0 Red Wings win, Harper scored two and assisted on two for a four point game. Pete LoPresti had an awkward night in net for the North Stars, allowing the five goals on just 24 shots. Jim Rutherford earned the shutout facing just 14 shots.
Between 1962-63 and 1980-81, Terry Harper played 1,066 regular season and 112 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Colorado Rockies. He was a five time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs.
