The captain of the Red Wings, Ted has been with Detroit longer than any player on the squad. Considered one of the greatest Left Wings to ever play in the NHL, he has earned All-Star ratings in 7 of his 10 seasons in the League. During his NHL career he has to his credit 527 points with 245 goals and 282 assists. He led the NHL in 1949-50 with 78 points (23 goals and 55 assists).
Details
Prior to 1954-55, Ted Lindsay was a First Team All-Star six times and a Second Team All-Star once. He would be selected First Team again in 1955-56 and 1956-57. Lindsay did earn the Art Ross Trophy in 1949-50, leading the NHL with a modest 78 points, nine more than teammate Sid Abel. He also led in helpers with a whopping 19 assist edge over second place Paul Ronty of the Boston Bruins.
1949-50 was not a career year offensively, however, for Lindsay. In 1956-57, he scored 30 goals and assisted on 55 for 85 points with Detroit. He led the NHL in assists with four more than Jean Beliveau of the Montreal Canadiens and fell four points shy of his second Art Ross Trophy behind teammate Gordie Howe.
In all, Ted Lindsay played in 1,068 regular season and 133 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1944-45 and 1964-65 with the Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. He helped the Wings to four Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966. His jersey number 7 was retired by Detroit in 1991.
