Card Notes

Despite being the son of a member of hockey’s Hall of Fame, young Syl certainly isn’t going to have to play in his father’s shadow. He’s a free-skating center with a graceful and effective style. Last season was the best ever for Syl and he led all Pittsburgh scorers. He was acquired in a 1971 trade with the New York Rangers.

Details

Indeed, the 59 points Syl Apps contributed in 1971-72 led the Pittsburgh Penguins. He would do it again in 1972-73 but with much greater numbers. Apps scored 29 goals and added 56 assists for 85 points. His assist total tied him for eighth in the NHL with Stan Mikita of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Originally drafted by the New York Rangers in 1964, Syl played just 31 games with the Blue Shirt, all in 1970-71 before being sent to the Penguins midseason. On January 26, 1971, he was sent to Pittsburgh with a player to be named later, who turned out to be Sheldon Kannegiesser, for Glen Sather.

After playing in the post season in 1969-70 with both the Omaha Knights of the CHL and the Buffalo Bisons of the AHL, winning championships with both, Apps scored his first NHL goal with New York in 1970-71. Ironically, it was against the Penguins and the only goal he would score as a Ranger.

On November 29, 1970 at Madison Square Garden, Apps put one past Al Smith at 7:51 of the third, assisted by Bob Nevin, to close out the scoring in a 6-2 win for the home team. Syl was responsible for just two of the 44 shots put toward the Pittsburgh nets in the game.

Between 1970-71 and 1979-80, Syl Apps played 727 regular season and 23 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings. In four consecutive season with the Penguins, he scored no less than 24 goals in each. His career best offensively came in 1975-76 when he totaled 99 points on 32 goals and 67 assists.
