Details
Steve Vickers did lead the New York Rangers in goal scoring for the 1974-75 NHL season. His 41 markers beat out Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle, both with 36. The final four of those 41 came in a March 30, 1975 game against the expansion Kansas City Scouts at Madison Square Garden.
That night, the Rangers spotted the Scouts a 2-1 lead that lasted until the 8:10 mark of the second period. Then, the Blue Shirts exploded for seven consecutive goals to win 8-2. Vickers scored his 38th through 41st of the season while also assisting on a Jean Ratelle goal for a five point game. His second and third goals came within 28 seconds of each other.
Gilbert and Ratelle had pretty good nights of their own. Rod had five assists while Jean had a goal and three helpers. Peter McDuffe was in the Kansas City net for the duration, facing an unrelenting 59 shots.
The 41 goals, 48 assists and 89 points Steve put up in 1974-75 remained as career bests. He would score at least 30 in his first four seasons and would surpass 20 goals six times during his NHL career.
Between 1972-73 and 1981-82, Steve Vickers played 698 regular season and 68 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Rangers. He was a first round pick by the club at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft and needed just a single year of seasoning with the Omaha Knights in the CHL before having his Calder Trophy winning campaign.
