Details
Good call by the “observers”. Steve Shutt not only hit the 50 goal plateau in 1976-77 but kept going until he had 60. Evenly distributed, despite the high goal count, he had just two hat tricks. On November 6, 1976, Steve had three in an 11-3 blowout of the Chicago Blackhawks at the Forum in Montreal. He lacked an assist and was denied the Gordie Howe Hat Trick despite dropping the gloves with Chicago’s Darcy Rota.
Shutt became the first member of the Habs to score 60 goals in a season. The following year, Guy Lafleur equaled the mark. To date, the duo are the only players in franchise history to reach the mark. Despite being known as a goal scorer, this was the only time Steve would reach 50 or more in a season.
Between 1972-73 and 1984-85, Steve Shutt appeared in 930 regular season and 99 playoff games in the National Hockey League. All but his final 59 games were played with Montreal. He finished out his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings. He was a First Team All-Star once and was selected to the Second Team twice. Shutt helped the Habs to five Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
