Details
Serge Savard was CPHL rookie of the year for the 1966-67 season, playing for the Houston Apollos. Over 68 games, Savard contributed 32 points on seven goals and 25 assists. His 155 penalty minutes placed him third in the league. That year, Serge also saw his first NHL action, playing two games for the Montreal Canadiens.
Two years later, he was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner, helping the 1968-69 Canadiens to a Stanley Cup championship. Savard provided ten points from the blue line over 14 playoff games. In game two of the final series against the St. Louis Blues, Serge assisted on the game winning goal by Dick Duff. In game three, he scored the first goal of the game, the game winning goal in a 4-0 shutout. The Habs would sweep the Blues in four games for the championship.
1974-75 proved to be Savard’s best offensive season of his career. Playing the full 80 game schedule, he scored 20 goals and assisted on 40 for 60 points, all career highs. This performance got him some attention for the Norris Trophy, finishing fifth in voting behind Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin, Guy Lapointe and Borje Salming.
Between 1966-67 and 1982-83, Serge Savard appeared in 1,040 regular season and 130 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets. The eight time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
