Details
The incident with Bernie Geoffrion, referred to on the back of this 1954-55 Parkhurst hockey card happened on December 20, 1953 at Madison Square Garden. Murphy and Boom Boom came together in a stick-swinging battle at 15:20 of the second period.
A two hander across the face gave Ron a broken jaw and concussion. Both were assessed misconducts for intent to injure and suspended. Murphy did not play for the Rangers again that season but did put time in with the Saskatoon Quakers of the WHL.
Murphy was back with the Rangers full time in 1954-55 for what was his first full season in the NHL. He played 1955-56 with the Blue Shirts before splitting the following season between New York and the Providence Reds in the AHL. Prior to 1957-58, Ron was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Hank Ciesla.
It was with the 1955-56 Rangers that Murphy recorded his only career hat trick. On October 7, 1955, the first game of the year for New York, they won on the road 7-4 over the Blackhawks at Chicago Stadium. Ron scored a goal in each period and assisted on Andy Bathgate‘s game winning goal for a four point night. Gump Worsley faced 47 shots in the win but Chicago goalie Al Rollins was absolutely beat up with 54 shots put his way.
Between 1952-53 and 1969-70, Ron Murphy played 889 regular season and 53 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers, Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He was a Stanley Cup champion with the Hawks in 1960-61.
