Details

In the first game between Ron Francis and Mike Liut, it was the younger of the second cousins that stole the spotlight. On December 9, 1981, Liut and the St. Louis Blues paid a visit to the Hartford Civic Center. Ron had two goals and two assists for four points in the game, including the game winner. Liut didn’t do half bad, stopping 35 of 40 shots but Brian Sutter was the only Blues player to get one past Greg Millen in the 5-1 Whalers win.

Of course, the two would be teammates in Hartford from 1984-85 to 1989-90. Liut was traded to the Whalers on February 21, 1985 with Jorgen Pettersson for Greg Millen and Mark Johnson. He was traded away to the Washington Capitals on March 5, 1990 for Yvon Corriveau.

It was Mark Johnson that dethroned Francis as team scoring leader in 1983-84 with a four point edge. He would regain the team lead in 1984-85 with nearly a 20 point edge over the trio of Sylvain Turgeon, Ray Neufeld and Greg Malone.

Between 1981-82 and 2003-04, Ron Francis played 1,731 regular season and 171 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs. His 1,249 regular season assists place him second in the NHL all-time, behind just Wayne Gretzky. He’s fourth all-time in games played and fifth in total points. Ron Francis was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
