1978-79 was a huge change of scenery for Rogie Vachon, moving to the Detroit Red Wings. His games played dropped from 70 with the Los Angeles Kings in 1977-78 to 50, sharing duties in Detroit with Jim Rutherford. Vachon’s goals against average jumped from 2.87 in 1977-78 to 3.91 in 1978-79, the highest over his career.
The frustration of playing for the Red Wings in the 1970’s showed through in Rogie’s penalty minute total in 1978-79. His career total was 47 PIM. In 78-79, he piled up 21 of those. 15 minutes of the total came in one game, a 5-1 road loss to the Washington Capitals. At the end of the game, he went toe-to-toe with Washington goalie Bernie Wolfe, both receiving five for fighting and a ten minute misconduct. The kicker was, Wolfe wasn’t even playing in the game.
Between 1966-67 and 1981-82, Rogatien Vachon played 795 regular season and 48 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He won two Stanley Cup championships with the Habs and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.
