Details
Despite the Los Angeles Kings having a mediocre season in 1976-77, Rogie Vachon was a standout. Playing 68 games during the regular season, he posted a 2.73 goals against average with eight shutouts. In voting for the Hart Trophy, Vachon was third in voting behind winner Guy Lafleur and runner-up Bobby Clarke.
Of his eight shutouts in 1976-77, two were against the New York Islanders and one was against the strong Boston Bruins team. In a November 16, 1976 home game at the Forum against the Cleveland Barons, it was a goaltending battle between Rogie and Gary Simmons. Not a single puck got past the pair with Vachon making 31 saves to 37 by Simmons with both earning a shutout in the 0-0 draw.
Between 1966-67 and 1981-82, Rogatien Vachon played 795 regular season and 48 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He won two Stanley Cup championships with the Habs and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.
