Details
ERROR – Rene Robert played with Toronto and Pittsburgh prior to joining the Buffalo Sabres, not Philadelphia. He started his NHL career with the Maple Leafs in 1970-71, appearing in just five games for the team that year. He started 1971-72 with the Penguins before a mid-season trade sent him to Buffalo in exchange for Eddie Shack.
In 1972-73, Robert’s 83 points were five behind team leader Gilbert Perreault. In 1973-74, his 65 points put him second on the team behind Rick Martin. He took over as team leader in 1974-75 with 100 points, a four point edge over Perreault and six point edge over Martin.
Included in his 100 1974-75 points was a four point performance at the Forum in Montreal with three goals and an assist. He scored a goal in each period, all on Montreal goalie Ken Dryden, and also assisted on a goal by Danny Gare. The French Connection Line combined for ten points against the team they grew up idolizing. Each goalie, Dryden and Gary Bromley, faced 38 shots each in the 8-6 win for the Sabres.
The 1975 Stanley Cup playoffs went well for Rene, as well. He totaled 13 points in 16 games as the Sabres reached the final before falling to the Flyers in six games. Three of his five goals were game winners, one in each series that Buffalo played.
In game four of the semi-final against the Canadiens, Robert scored at 5:56 of the first overtime to give the Sabres a 5-4 win and a 3-2 series lead. That was the last of six shots by Rene on Dryden in the game. Buffalo pummeled Ken with 45 in the game while Gerry Desjardins turned away 15 of 19. Robert also assisted on the game tying goal by Craig Ramsay at 14:35 of the third that forced overtime.
Between 1970-71 and 1981-82, Rene Robert played 744 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins and Colorado Rockies. In seven consecutive seasons, he scored no less than 21 goals. He had a career high 40 in both 1972-73 and 1974-75.
