Card Notes

Reg was traded to New York last year and immediately assumed his familiar role as “policeman” on the Rangers forward line. An expert in penalty killing, Reg is one of the toughest checkers in the NHL.

Details

On January 10, 1966, Reg Fleming was traded from the Boston Bruins to the New York Rangers for John McKenzie. In only 35 games with the Rangers to finish out the 1965-66 NHL season, Fleming accumulated a whopping 124 penalty minutes. His combined total of 166 PIM between Boston and New York led the NHL with a 13 minute cushion over runner-up John Ferguson of the Montreal Canadiens.

Included in that penalty minute total were the 28 he was assessed on his return to Boston Garden with the Rangers. On January 22, 1966 in just his fourth game with New York, Fleming did not help offensively in a 5-3 loss to the Bruins. He did pick up the 28 PIM, mostly stemming from an incident involving Ted Green in the second period.

In 1966-67, Reg fell behind Ferguson for the penalty minute lead. His 146 placed him second, 31 behind Ferguson. Fleming provided scoring, as well, with four two-goal games and a total of 15 goals in 61 games. On November 30, 1966 at Chicago Stadium, he scored a pair and assisted on a Bernie Geoffrion goal for a three point game. He also had a third period fight with Wally Boyer for the Gordie Howe Hat Trick in the 5-0 win for the visitors.

Between 1959-60 and 1970-71, Reg Fleming played 749 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres. He was a Stanley Cup champion with the Blackhawks. Reg also played 120 regular season and 12 playoff games in the WHA, all with the Chicago Cougars.
