He was third in overall scoring for the Wings, 12 points behind leader Dale McCourt. Denis Potvin led all NHL defensemen with 94 points.

The performance helped Larson finish fifth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. He was just behind Detroit teammate Dale McCourt with Mike Bossy taking the award, Barry Beck following in second and Don Edwards placing third.

He scored his first NHL goal in fine fashion. In his sixth game of the 1977-78 season, the Red Wings visited the Penguins at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena on October 26, 1977. Reed scored the game winner at 7:33 of the third period on Denis Herron, assisted by Paul Woods and Perry Miller to make the score 4-2 Detroit. The Wings went on to win the game 4-3.

Between 1976-77 and 1989-90, Reed Larson played 904 regular season and 32 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, Minnesota North Stars and Buffalo Sabres.
