Details
As the card says, Red Berenson exploded for a six goal game during the 1968-69 National Hockey League season. Sure, others have done it, although few. But, this performance stands alone even today as the only time a player from the away team has notched six goals in a single game.
It happened on November 7, 1968. The St. Louis Blues were visiting the Spectrum in Philadelphia to play the Flyers. In net for the home team was Doug Favell. Berenson’s six goal performance overshadowed the 26 save shutout by Jacques Plante in the 8-0 win. According to Red, it was almost a seven goal night with one of his shots ringing off the crossbar late in the game. All four second period goals in the game were off the stick of Berenson.
Despite the insane offensive era that revolved around Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, there have only been eight players in NHL history to score 6 or more goal in a single game. Darryl Sittler was the last in 1976 (his record setting 10 point game against the Bruins).
Between 1961-62 and 1977-78, Red Berenson played 987 regular season and 85 playoff games in the National Hockey with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings. He won a Stanley Cup championship with the Habs in 1964-65.
