Card Notes
“Red played one season with Montreal in 1963-64, but was sent to Quebec City the next year. Montreal could not use Red full time so he was traded to New York where he should prove he belongs in the NHL.”
The truth is, Berenson played games with the Habs each season between 1961-62 and 1965-66. However, 1963-64 was his only full season, appearing in 69 of 70 games.
With the Rangers, he didn’t really prove he belonged. Red appeared in 30 games in 1966-67 and just 19 games in 1967-68, scoring just a total of two goals over the two seasons.
But, in the final half of 1967-68, Berenson did prove he belonged in the NHL with the expansion St. Louis Blues. After a slow start to his career, Red finished up 13 shy of 1,000 regular season games in the National Hockey League. He spent the rest of his playing career split between the Blues and Detroit Red Wings.
After a stint coaching in the NHL with the Blues and Buffalo Sabres, Red Berenson became the face of University of Michigan hockey, coaching the Wolverines for the better part of four decades.
