Card Notes
He’s Pete to his teammates and a second-team all-star defenseman in NHL. Considered small at 165 pounds, Pete makes up for lack of size by his maneuverability. Has the technique of riding out an opponent down fine. A high scorer for backliner, Pete also led NHL in penalties.
Details
In 1959-60, Pierre Pilote was just third on his team with 100 penalty minutes, behind Stan Mikita and Elmer Vasko. In 1960-61, he sat 165 PIM. This was good for first in the NHL, 20 more than teammate Reg Fleming. The bad-boy Blackhawks placed five players in the top ten, also including Eric Nesterenko, Murray Balfour and Stan Mikita.
However, in the playoffs Pilote improved his discipline and sat just four minor penalties over 12 games while leading the Blackhawks with 15 points. Chicago finished third overall during the regular season, 17 points behind first place Montreal and 15 behind second place Toronto. Yet, they defeated Montreal and the Detroit Red Wings to capture the Stanley Cup championship.
Over the 12 playoff games in 1960-61, Pierre was held off the scoresheet just once, in the game 4 2-1 loss to the Red Wings in the final. With the series tied at 2-2, he bounced back with a three point game in game 5. In the 6-3 win at Chicago Stadium, he assisted on Stan Mikita’s game winner in the third period, also assisting on a Murray Balfour marker and scoring his third of the playoffs.
Between 1955-56 and 1968-69, Pierre Pilote played 890 regular season and 86 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a three-time Norris Trophy winner and entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.
