Details

In 1972-73, Phil Roberto’s five game winning goals for the St. Louis Blues came against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres. Perhaps, the most impressive was against the Penguins.

On January 2, 1973, the Blues played a home game against Pittsburgh at the St. Louis Arena. Roberto assisted on the first St. Louis goal, scored late in the first period by Fran Huck on Denis Herron. In the later stages of the second frame, the Pens held a 4-2 lead on an Al McDonough goal at 15:09. However, the Blues came within a goal just 15 seconds later when Pierre Plante scored.

46 seconds after that, Roberto set up the game tying goal by Gary Sabourin. It looked destined to finish in a 4-4 tie but Phil put in the game winner at 18:34 of the third, assisted by Huck. It was his tenth of the 1972-73 NHL season. By the end of the campaign, he would double the total, finishing the year with 20.

Earlier in the year, Roberto put up a Gordie Howe Hat Trick in an 8-3 home win over the Detroit Red Wings. Phil scored the team’s sixth goal of the game, putting one past Roy Edwards early in the third, assisted by Barclay Plager and Mike Murphy. He also assisted on a Steve Durbano goal 2:38 into the first period. Roberto was involved in a first period scrap but it was Durbano that racked up the minutes with 24 PIM in the game.

Between 1969-70 and 1976-77, Phil Roberto played 385 regular season and 31 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, Kansas City Scouts, Colorado Rockies and Cleveland Barons. He also appeared in 53 regular season and four playoff games with the Birmingham Bulls during the 1977-78 WHA season. Phil won a Stanley Cup with the Habs in 1970-71.
