Card Notes

Phil was the Flames’ number one selection in the Expansion Draft to stock Atlanta and Long Island last June. He was a top-rated goalie in the Montreal system, but the Canadiens were overstocked with goaltenders. Was the leading goaltender in the CHL at Houston in 1968-69. Phil played his junior hockey at Niagara Falls and shared league MVP honors his final year.

Details

Phil Myre was the first player selected in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft, taken by the Atlanta Flames out of the Montreal Canadiens organization. After the New York Islanders took Gerry Desjardins from the Chicago Blackhawks, the Flames completed their goaltending tandem, drafting Dan Bouchard from the Boston Bruins.

Myre came to Atlanta with some NHL experience, appearing in 49 games over three seasons with the Canadiens. He recorded one shutout over that time, his first of 14 over his NHL career. In his first game of the 1970-71 NHL season, Phil turned away all 14 shots in a 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

A bit of an ERROR – He played quite well with the Niagara Falls Flyers in 1967-68 but was not the recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy as most valuable player that year, as the card suggests. He did, however, help the Flyers to a Memorial Cup championship that year.

Between 1969-70 and 1982-83, Phil Myre played 439 regular season and 12 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Atlanta Flames, St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers, Colorado Rockies and Buffalo Sabres.
