Details
Peter Stastny put up what would stand as career high numbers in 1981-82 with 93 assists and 139 points. It was his second of six straight seasons with 100 or more points. He would accomplish the feat a total of seven times over his NHL career.
Seven of those 139 points came in a single game. On April 1, 1982, in an 8-5 win over the Bruins at Boston Garden, Stastny had three goals and four assists. He wasn’t the only Nordique with three goals. Alain Cote had a natural hat trick in the first period. Peter’s brother Marian Stastny had five assists. Terry O’Reilly of the Bruins had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick with a goal, assist and second period fight with Dale Hunter.
Stastny didn’t quite top that performance in 1982-83 but six of his 124 points came in one match. On December 11, 1982, Peter had three goals and three assists in a 7-4 win over the Penguins at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. The Stastny brothers combined for 13 points in the game with Marian adding two goals and three helpers while Anton had a goal and assist. Greg Malone of the Penguins had the GHHT in this one with two goals, an assist and a third period scrap with Pierre Aubry.
Between 1980-81 and 1994-95, Peter Stastny played 977 regular season and 93 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Quebec Nordiques, New Jersey Devils and St. Louis Blues. In 1980-81, he was the recipient of the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. Stastny was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998.
