Details
It was limited but Peter McDuffe did get into ten games for the St. Louis Blues in 1971-72, along with one in the post season against the Boston Bruins. In most of those games, he faced more than 30 shots and was not on the winning side in any.
There’s a slight ERROR on the back of this 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee Peter McDuffe rookie card. He actually shared the CHL MVP award in 1970-71 with three others, not the two stated. The three others include Omaha Knights teammates Andre Dupont and Gerry Ouellette, along with Joe Zanussi of the Fort Worth Wings. He led the Knights to their second consecutive championship.
Despite not winning his first NHL game, McDuffe was certainly one of the stars of the game. On October 13, 1971, he was in net at Chicago Stadium for a road game against the Blackhawks. He stopped 33 of 34 shots but the Blues provided no offense and the Hawks won the game 1-0. Cliff Koroll scored the only goal of the game at 18:43 of the second, assisted by Dennis Hull and Stan Mikita. Tony Esposito made just 18 saves for the shutout.
His game against the Bruins in the semi-final turned out to be the only post season game Peter would play in the NHL. It was game three of a four game sweep and St. Louis lost 7-2. McDuffe stopped 31 of 38 shots, including six from Phil Esposito. Phil’s lone goal of the game at 19:42 of the first period served as the game winner. John McKenzie and Mike Walton both had two goal nights for the Bruins.
Between 1971-72 and 1975-76, Peter McDuffe played 57 games in the National Hockey League and just the one in the playoffs, appearing with the Blues, New York Rangers, Kansas City Scouts and Detroit Red Wings. He also played 12 WHA games with the Indianapolis Racers in 1977-78.
