Details
In 1963-64, Pete Stemkowski was fourth in OHA Junior A scoring with 103 points, 32 behind Eddie Powers Trophy winner Andre Boudrias. Over the run to the Memorial Cup, Pete added 29 points in just 12 games. That Marlboros team had an all-star cast of future NHL stars including Mike Walton, Ron Ellis and Wayne Carleton with Gary “Suitcase” Smith between the pipes.
1965-66 was the year Stemkowski put the minor leagues in his rearview mirror. The next time he would do time in the minors was in 1978-79, his final year of pro hockey, when he played for the Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League.
Between 1963-64 and 1977-78, Pete Stemkowski played 967 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings. He was a 20 goal scorer five times and had a career best 70 points with the Rangers in 1973-74. Pete was a Stanley Cup champion with the Maple Leafs in 1966-67.
