Paul was selected as the Rockies’ Rookie of the Year for 1980-81. A power play specialist, he was credited with 9 power play goals and 2 game winning goals for the club. Paul enjoyed an outstanding junior career and was Second Team OHA All-Star for 1979-80. Paul’s last amateur club was the Windsor Spitfires in 1979-80.

Playing just 61 games for the Colorado Rockies in 1980-81, Paul Gagne scored an impressive 25 goals as a rookie. The team’s first round pick at the 1980 NHL Entry Draft, 19th overall, was coming off a 101 point season with the Windsor Spitfires in 1979-80. He was the third of three 100 point players on the Spits that year behind Blair Barnes and Brent Jarrett.
The first of his two game winning goals recorded in 1980-81 came in just his third game. Paul scored his second and third goals of the season on October 14, 1980 against the Quebec Nordiques. His first of the game on Michel Plasse, assisted by Walt McKechnie and Rob Ramage, made the score 2-1, all the Rockies would need in a 4-1 win.
Between 1980-81 and 1989-90, Paul Gagne played 390 regular season games in the National Hockey League with the Rockies, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders. He did not play in the post season. The 25 goals in his rookie season remained a career best, although coming close in 1984-85 scoring 24 for the Devils.
