Details
Pat Hughes had five shorthanded goals in 1982-83 for the Edmonton Oilers. Two of those indeed came in the same game against the St. Louis Blues on January 11, 1983 at The Checkerdome. Hughes did set a NHL record, scoring those two shorthanded goals in a span of 25 seconds while Don Jackson was in the penalty box, serving a minor for roughing.
The first of those two was scored at 15:18 of the second period on Mike Liut, assisted by Dave Hunter. This made the score 5-1 for the Oilers and marked the end of the night for Liut, replaced by Rick Heinz. 25 seconds later, Hughes scored on Heinz, assisted by Randy Gregg and Kevin Lowe. That second goal stood as the game winner in the 7-5 Edmonton win.
This NHL record was topped by fellow Edmonton Oiler Esa Tikkanen on November 12, 1988. Tikkanen scored a pair just 12 seconds apart on Toronto’s Alan Bester. The goals were scored at 10:44 and 10:56 of the first period while Kevin McClelland was in the box, both assisted by Jari Kurri.
Interestingly, the Oilers next stop in 1983-84 was Chicago Stadium the following night. Hughes again scored shorthanded and again it was the game winning goal. In the 10-4 victory over the Blackhawks, Pat had two goals and an assist for a three point game. The Oilers had another shortie in the match but this time if was off the stick of Paul Coffey.
The Calgary native was drafted in the third round of the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. Between 1977-78 and 1986-87, Pat Hughes played 573 regular season and 71 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers. He was a three-time Stanley Cup champ, once with the Habs and twice with the Oilers.
