Details
Noel Price was a three time winner of the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL’s top defenseman. 1969-70 with the Springfield Kings was his first, followed by wins as a member of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in 1971-72 and 1975-76.
As far as playing his 500th NHL game in 1975-76, it didn’t quite pan out. As stated on the front of the card, Price retired prior to the start of the season. However, he returned to play three games for the Flames mid-season and finished his NHL career with 499 regular season games played.
A member of the American Hockey League Hall of Fame, Noel has four Calder Cup championships, two with the Springfield Indians and two with the Voyageurs. With the 1971-72 Nova Scotia team, the roster included the likes of Larry Robinson, Darcy Rota, Yvon Lambert with the goaltending duo of Wayne Thomas and Michel Plasse.
His last full season with Atlanta saw this stay-at-home defenseman have nearly a career year with four goals. His best came in 1967-68 when he scored six with the expansion Pittsburgh Penguins. Of his four, one was a shorthanded marker against the Philadelphia Flyers and it was an interesting one.
On November 24, 1974 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, Price took a minor for hooking at 2:28 of the second. Pat Quinn then also was assessed two for hooking at 3:47, leaving the Flames two men down. Atlanta killed off the five on three and Noel scored on Bernie Parent eight seconds after leaving the box, assisted by Tom Lysiak.
Between 1957-58 and 1975-76, Noel Price played 499 regular season and 12 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Atlanta Flames. He won a Stanley Cup championship with the Habs in 1965-66, playing two games in the semi-final against Toronto and one against Detroit in the final.
