Despite missing that single game, Libett put up a career high 31 goals for the Wings in 71-72. Along with the were career highs of three shorthanded goals and five game winners. Nick would also record the only hat trick of his NHL career, scoring all three in a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
Two of Libett’s three shorthanded markers that year came in a single game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Olympia on February 12, 1972. The first was scored just 1:59 into the game on Tony Esposito with Ron Stackhouse serving a minor for hooking. Gary Bergman assisted on that goal. The second came at 15:08 of the second, unassisted with Leon Rochefort was in the box.
Between 1967-68 and 1980-81, Nick Libett played 982 regular season and 16 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. He reached the 20 goal plateau in six seasons.
