Details

Despite being included in the 1984-85 O-Pee-Chee NHL hockey card set, Mike Palmateer played his last games in the National Hockey League in 1983-84. Sharing duties with Allan Bester and Rick St. Croix with Ken Wregget also seeing his first NHL action, Palmateer’s goals against average ballooned to a career high 4.88.

In the November 9, 1983 game mentioned on the back of the card, Mike faced a modest 24 shots from the New Jersey Devils in the 2-1 win at Maple Leaf Gardens. New Jersey certainly wasn’t the toughest team in the NHL at the time, either, leaving Toronto with a 2-14 record.

It was an interesting game in that two of the three goals scored were on the penalty kill. Dale McCourt opened the scoring for Toronto at 13:12 of the first period, putting one past Ron Low with Dan Daoust in the box. After Jim Benning scored what would be the game winner at 6:21 of the third, assisted by McCourt and Bill Derlago, Pat Verbeek broke Palmateer’s shutout attempt, scoring shorthanded with Phil Russell sitting out a minor penalty.

Between 1976-77 and 1983-84, Mike Palmateer played 356 regular season and 29 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals. Originally a fifth round pick by the Leafs at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft, Palmateer recorded 17 shutouts with an additional two in the post season.
