That record of eight assists set by Mike Palmateer in 1980-81 didn’t last long. Grant Fuhr of the Edmonton Oilers shattered the mark in 1983-84 with 14. Fuhr’s record still stands today. Palmateer still has the third most, tied with Fuhr, Ron Hextall and Tom Borasso. Curtis Joseph is second with the nine assists he contributed in 1991-92 with the St. Louis Blues.
Palmateer’s two shutouts for the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1977-78 playoffs equaled Ken Dryden of the Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. The first blank came in the opening round against the Los Angeles Kings. The second came in the quarter-finals against the New York Islanders. One of Dryden’s two shutouts came against the Maple Leafs in the semi-final.
Interestingly, in those 1977-78 playoffs, Mike picked up a five minute major for fighting. In game 4 of the quarter-finals against the New York Islanders, Palmateer got into a scuffle with Gary Howatt in the third period.
Mike Palmateer played in 356 regular season games in the National Hockey League between 1976-77 and 1983-84 with the Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals. Over that time, he posted a 3.53 goals against average with 17 shutouts.
