Details
In 1980-81, Mike Bossy led the NHL with 68 goals, a ten goal edge over runner-up Marcel Dionne of the Los Angeles Kings. His 28 power play goals also led the league with Dionne and Charlie Simmer coming in tied for second with 23 each. His ten game winners tied him for first with Simmer.
One of his two shorthanded markers in 1980-81 came as part of a hat trick on December 14, 1980 at Winnipeg Arena. In a 5-4 win over the Jets, Bossy’s third of the game and 33rd of the season was the final goal and game winner. Mike’s first of the game was scored on the penalty kill, assisted by Bryan Trottier, with Bob Bourne in the box for high sticking. It was a valiant performance by the Jets, a team looking for just their second win in 30 games to start the season.
Bossy had three four-goal games in 1980-81. Amazingly, the Islanders won just one of the three, tying the other two. What really embodies the play of this legendary sniper is that those 12 goals were scored on just 19 shots.
Mike’s performance in the 1981 Stanley Cup playoffs was also legendary and he may be the best player to not be awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for his contribution. However, he did win it the following year. Over 18 games, Bossy was left off the scoresheet just twice, totaling 35 points on 17 goals and 18 assists.
In the opening round, a best of five against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Bossy went to town on the Buds (as did the rest of the Islanders). Over the three game sweep, Mike had ten points on four goals and six assists. In games one and three, he scored the game winner.
Between 1977-78 and 1986-87, Mike Bossy played 752 regular season and 129 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Islanders. The four-time Stanley Cup champion won the Calder Trophy in the 1977-78 as the league’s top rookie. He was also the recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy on three occasions. Bossy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
