Details

Despite topping 60 goals in five of his ten years in the NHL and surpassing the 50 goal plateau each season but his last, Mike Bossy led the league in goal scoring just twice. 1978-79 was his first, scoring a career high 69 with the New York Islanders. He would lead again in 1980-81 with 68 goals.

The 27 power play goals noted on the back of the card still ranks tied for 13th all-time for most in an NHL season. The record belongs to Tim Kerr who scored 34 with the man advantage in 1985-86 playing for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Getting to that number of 27, Bossy had five games with two power play goals, three of those times the two markers were part of a hat trick. On December 28, 1978 at the Omni in Atlanta, Mike had four points on three goals and an assist in a 10-4 win over the Flames. Two were scored with the man-advantage and his only even-strength goal was the game winner. His assist was on Bryan Trottier‘s lone goal in a five point game.

Mike Bossy’s NHL career was limited by injuries to 752 regular season and 129 Stanley Cup playoff games between 1977-78 and 1986-87, all with the New York Islanders. That makes his career 573 goals that much more amazing. That number still ranks him 22nd all-time.
