La marche des années et deux blessures graves reçues consécutivement l’associèrent pour donner à Maurice Richard pour d’ennuis que n’importe lequel des ailiers de gauche qu’il eut à envisager dans ses luttes dans la LN.
Details
Indeed, the final three years of Maurice Richard’s NHL career were injury shortened. In fact, the 1959-60 season, the last of his career, saw Rocket play the most games since the 1956-57 season. Even then, he appeared in just 51 games for the Montreal Canadiens during the regular season and eight more in the playoffs.
In his final regular season games, the Rocket scored the last of his 544 regular season goals. In a 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, Richard scored Montreal’s only marker at 1:17 of the third period on Rangers goalie Al Rollins and assisted by Henri Richard and Dickie Moore.
The 1959-60 season was definitely a nice send-off for the Rocket. In his final campaign, the Habs finished first overall by a wide margin. In the playoffs, they swept both the Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs to capture the Stanley Cup championship. It would be their last of five consecutive Cup wins.
Rocket Richard finished up his National Hockey League career with 978 regular season and 133 playoff games played between 1942-43 and 1959-60, all with Montreal. He was a Hart Trophy winner in 1946-47 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.
