Details
After a lull in 1977-78, Marcel Dionne launched the next stage of his NHL career in 1978-79, becoming a prolific goal scorer. Dionne scored a career best 59, finishing second in the NHL, ten behind leader Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders. It was his second 50 goal season and the first of five consecutive.
Four of his 59 in 1978-79, came against the club that selected him second overall at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. On January 13, 1979 at Detroit Olympia, Dionne scored four of the seven goals scored by the Los Angeles Kings in a 7-3 win. All four were scored on former Kings goalie Rogie Vachon.
Between 1971-72 and 1988-89, Marcel Dionne played 1,348 regular season and just 49 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. His 731 career regular season goals rank him sixth all-time, ten behind Brett Hull and 14 ahead of Phil Esposito. Dionne was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
