Card Notes

Second choice in the 1971 NHL amateur draft and, naturally, Detroit’s first. First player in more than 30 years to win two successive scoring titles in OHA Junior A. Had 143 points in 46 games with St. Catharines, Ont., Juniors in 1970-71. Note: Not a big player but a good skater and crafty playmaker.

Details

A little clarity on the remark about being the first to win two successive scoring titles in the OHA Junior A: The Eddie Powers Trophy as top scorer was introduced in 1945-46 and the league retroactively recognized winners dating back to 1933-34. Marcel Dionne was the first player ever to win the award twice. Since, Peter Sarno and Corey Locke are the only two players to win it in consecutive seasons. Marc Savard is also a two time winner but he did it over a three year span.

Dionne jumped right onto the scene in 1971-72 with 28 goals and 49 assists for 77 points with the Red Wings. He sat just 14 minutes in penalties, a sign of things to come for the two time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy. Marcel placed third in voting for the Calder Trophy behind Ken Dryden and Rick Martin.

The only player drafted ahead of Dionne at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft, Guy Lafleur, had similar numbers in his debut season with the Montreal Canadiens. Lafleur scored 29 goals and assisted on 35 for 64 points. However, Lafleur was not in contention for the rookie of the year award.

Dionne showed his young Montreal foes where he stood in a head-to-head battle on March 19, 1972 at Detroit Olympia. The Wings won the game 7-6, powered by a Marcel Dionne hat trick while Lafleur was left off the scoresheet. Dryden was in the nets for Montreal, allowing seven goals on 36 shots.

Marcel’s first career NHL goal came in his third game, a 9-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues at the St. Louis Arena. Dionne scored Detroit’s second goal of the game unassisted at 4:59 of the third period. The goal made the game 4-2 but the Blues came back with five straight for the blowout. In net for St. Louis was Ernie Wakely who faced just 16 shots on the night.

Between 1971-72 and 1988-89, Marcel Dionne appeared in 1,348 regular season and 49 playoff games with the Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. He shared Art Ross Trophy honours with Wayne Gretzky in 1979-80 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
